Basic Introduction to Transfusion Science (BITS)

Overview

This course provides a basic introduction to transfusion science, covering the journey of a blood donation, basic blood grouping, and the safety measures used to protect donors and patients.

The course combines self-paced online learning with a hands-on practical session in one of our NHSBT Training Laboratories. The online learning modules must be completed before attending the practical session.

If you are an NHS employee in England, please refer to the NHS Course Booking information before enrolling onto the course, as you may be eligible for a fully NHS England-funded place.

If you are interested in courses taking place in the next financial year, please view our future course dates and request to be added to our waiting list.

The Basic Introduction to Transfusion Science (BITS) course is designed for anyone who would like to better understand the science behind blood transfusion, even if they do not work in a laboratory or scientific role.

The course is suitable for learners from a wide range of professional backgrounds within NHSBT and the wider NHS, including:

  • support grade roles within pathology laboratories
  • blood donation teams
  • healthcare support roles
  • marketing and communications teams involved in blood donation and transfusion awareness

This list is not comprehensive, and learners from many other roles may also benefit from the course.

No previous laboratory experience or scientific knowledge is required.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the journey of a blood donation from donor to patient
  • Explain the basic principles of the ABO blood group system
  • Recognise the importance of safety processes within blood transfusion
  • Identify some of the equipment and techniques used within transfusion laboratories and within the blood donation setting.

The course includes the following online learning modules:

  • Vein to Vein: Follow the journey of a blood donation from donor to patient and explore the importance of voluntary blood donation and the impact each donation can make.
  • Basics of Blood Grouping: Discover the fundamentals of the ABO blood group system, including antigens, antibodies, inheritance, and why blood groups are so important in transfusion practice.
  • Transfusion Safety: Learn about the safety measures and processes used throughout blood transfusion to help protect both donors and patients.

Before attending the practical session, learners will also complete the following preparation modules:

  • Lab Safety: Understand the key health and safety principles required for working safely within a laboratory environment before attending the practical session.
  • Good Pipette Practice: Gain an introduction to pipette use to help prepare for the practical activities. Learners will be fully supported during the practical session.

BITS is delivered as a blended learning course combining online learning with a hands-on practical session.

Online learning

Learners will complete a series of short, self-paced online learning modules on Brightspace before attending the practical session.

The online learning takes approximately 3 hours to complete and can be completed in your own time. The modules will be available from 2 weeks prior to the practical teaching date.

Practical session

Learners will attend a one-day practical session at a local NHSBT Training Laboratory.

The practical session runs from 10:00–16:00 and includes:

  • demonstrations of laboratory techniques
  • blood grouping practical activities
  • virtual reality learning scenarios
  • opportunities to use equipment commonly used within transfusion science and blood donation settings
  • group discussions and facilitator-led activities

The practical session is designed for beginners and learners with varied experience levels. Facilitators will guide learners through activities step-by-step in a supportive learning environment.

Before attending the practical session, learners must:

  • complete all mandatory online learning modules
  • complete the Lab Safety module
  • review the practical session information on Brightspace

For safety reasons, learners attending the practical session must wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for a laboratory environment. Full guidance will be provided within the course materials.

If you require any reasonable adjustments, accessibility support, or would like to discuss any aspect of the practical environment before attending, please contact the Scientific and Clinical Training and Education Team as soon as possible.
