What we do

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a joint England and Wales Special Health Authority that provides a blood and transplantation service to the NHS.

Our remit includes the provision of a reliable, efficient supply of blood and associated services across England. We are also the organ donor organisation for the UK and are responsible for matching and allocating donated organs.

We manage the donation, storage, transfusion and transplantation of blood, organs, tissues, bone marrow and stems cells, and undertake innovative research focused on improving patient outcomes.

In addition we have a growing Advanced Therapies element to our organisation, including support for clinical trials, research, or the manufacture of cellular or molecular products.

More recently NHSBT has been supporting the national response to COVID-19 through the provision of Convalescent Plasma. This plasma has been used to support the recovery of COVID-19 infected patients in hospitals in two significant clinical trials across the UK.
