Advanced Transfusion Masterclass - One day masterclass

Overview

The Advanced Transfusion Masterclass 2025–26 will focus on Neonatal and Paediatric Transfusion, providing an in-depth look at complex clinical and laboratory practice in this specialist area.

The programme brings together leading experts from NHSBT RCI, hospital transfusion laboratories, and paediatric haematology. Delivered virtually over Zoom, through interactive case-based learning, you will gain practical insights into the challenges of transfusion in young patients and share learning with peers and experts.

Programme highlights include:

• SHOT Paediatric haemovigilance and case studies

• New paediatric guidelines: laboratory considerations

• Maximising a small sample in the RCI laboratory

• Donath–Landsteiner antibody investigation

• Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT): diagnosis and management

• Managing major haemorrhage in paediatrics

 

The Neonatal and Paediatric Transfusion theme will be delivered on the following dates:

• 2 October 2025, 10 December 2025, 11 February 2026 (same programme delivered on each date)

Attendees should be HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists or Clinical Scientists with extensive experience in an NHSBT laboratory or a hospital transfusion laboratory, experienced in routine transfusion science practice and with prior knowledge at a specialist level.

This course is specifically designed for those working at band 6 and higher, with a specialist transfusion qualification:

  • BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Hospital Transfusion Science
  • Scientist Training Programme (STP): Haematology and Transfusion Science pathway
  • MSc module in Haematology and Transfusion or Transfusion Science

This course will add to the delegate’s knowledge of the concepts of a variety of specific blood transfusion topics. By the end of the day, you should have an increased underpinning knowledge of the specialist topic, and able to apply this knowledge to interpret complex case studies.

The specific learning outcomes will differ based on the theme of the Advanced Masterclass.

The topic of the Advanced Masterclass will be publicised in advance through The Update, regional pathology networks, and regional blood transfusion networks.

The Advanced Masterclass is a 1-day programme that is delivered over Zoom.
